Chain Tension

Chain Tension

Postby RD400 » Fri Aug 29, 2008 3:49 pm

I learned at the Miami International Receway ( I was there to race my YZF600) from a suspension tuning expert that having your chain too tight can greatly affect handling. It is important to leave the chain loose enough to EASILY move up and down at least an inch. And this should be checked whlie you are SITTING on the motorcycle.

I thought I was adjusting my chain properly but apparently what I thought was one inch of play was far too tight.

If you adjust your chain too tight, it can bind during suspension travel and effectively prevent your wheel from reacting to bumps and road irregularities.

In addition, bearing damage can eventually result as the chain stresses the shaft with the drive sprocket.
